I like to imagine the brains behind this baselayer drew inspiration from the hardy sheep of the Lake District. The Cumbrian brand’s mid-weight 100% merino top is unfussy, reliable and simply felt great to wear. Its cocooning warmth proved a great comfort to me as I soldiered on with a stinking cold in the Cairngorms last month.
What will also comfort your pocket, is knowing that a top of comparable quality from a brand like Icebreaker or Smartwool will cost at least 10 quid more. A slim-fitting baselayer, tailored with flat seams, it felt soft to my skin. And even after a few washes, the wool’s texture has held up to the rough and tumble of the machine. I would probably have got away with fewer washes, as merino wool boasts a miraculous pongresistance.
A dropped back gives your lower back extra fabric coverage, so you won’t end up exposed to the elements if you’re stretching and the material rides up. Though perhaps not breathable enough for summer, it’s not so clammy that you won’t get wear from it in the cool shoulder seasons too.
IT'S GOOD Great quality merino for a reasonable price.
HOWEVER Ventilation could be better.
BEST FOR Winter walks everywhere, when you need a dependable layer.
