Back system: Panel, frame and harness

The Rab Veil XP 20L has a back system made from 3D mesh which Rab says wicks away moisture while also contorting to the wearer's body and movements, providing an optimal fit.

Called Mono Mesh, the harness is made with a Ripstop construction and panelled to ensure stretch where needed. It's also the same mesh that backs Rab's Veil 1L running belt.

This results in a back system which excels in performance, it’s lightweight, breathable and feels strong, as well as being extremely comfortable and has a ‘barely there’ feel.

It’s incredibly easy to wear, adjust and feels stable and secure.

What I particularly rate is that no matter how sweaty or drenched you get, the Mono Mesh doesn’t absorb anything which makes it a great material for running and sweating in. I’ve been testing the bag on the island of Malta, where temperatures hit 30 regularly and the back system has come into its own.

As the Veil XP back system is not stiff or rigid, the pack can also stuff down into a small size for travelling which is a helpful feature too.

Back length and sizing

The Rab Veil XP 20L is available in two sizes, small and medium. Small caters for those with a back length of 43cm and medium for 48cm.

I’m 180cm tall and after measuring my back I opted for the medium which worked well for me.

The two options do cater for a wide range of sizes, but I can’t help but wonder about those who fit outside of the prescription.

Once you’ve purchased your pack, the back system is non-adjustable.

Volume, shape and weight

The Rab Veil XP 20L pack has a 20L capacity which is ample size for a day hike and even a lightweight overnight-er.

When hiking in Malta I’m partial to a swim hike day out and the pack offers ample space for swimsuit, towel, a snorkel and the rest of my hiking kit. There’s often space left over.

The fit and shape of the Rab Veil XP 20L is effortlessly ergonomic, with a close to skin fit which is incredibly comfortable. The design makes you want to move fast, thanks to its barely there feel.

According to Rab, the Veil XP weighs 476g in a size medium, which is by all senses of the word ultralight.

Compared to similar capacity hiking daypacks on the market like the Red Lightweight Waterproof Backpack 22L which weighs 636g, the Rab Veil offers a big weight saving however it does cost £50 more.

Another lightweight option is theCotopaxi Batac 24L (482g) which is similar in weight but lacks the breadth of the Veil XP’s functional features.

If you want more storage the Rab Veil XP also comes in 30L for £135.

Features: Lid, storage, straps and weather protection

The Rab Veil XP 20L pack is made from waterproof fabric, has taped seams and a silicone coating which helps repel water. It boasts an IPX4 rating which means it is fully waterproof.

The pack has a roll top closure with a side buckle so you can easily compress the pack down if needed.

The range of storage solutions is where this pack really comes into its own. There are several dump pockets, including the front mesh pocket which is ideal for quick access to layers, as well as side pockets and bottle holders which are easy to reach on the go.

A real highlight are the innovative pole options, with loops on the front and a z pole sleeve on the side which means if you are hiking quickly you easily drop the poles in and out whenever you need them.

The most notable aspect of the Rab Veil XP is that it is designed like a running vest. While some hikers might not enjoy this aesthetic and prefer traditional hiking backpacks, there are plenty of good practical reasons for it.

The shoulder straps have space for two standard 500ml soft flasks and are also zip pockets for on-the-go access. This functionality is very useful when moving fast. However, it’s difficult to access anything in the zipped pockets without first removing a soft flask. On a running vest the zipped pockets are often under the flasks which negates this issue.

Furthermore, as a woman I found having soft flasks upfront on my chest quite uncomfortable when this pack is stuffed full. There are running vests with soft flask storage shaped for a women’s chest which could work better here.

Alongside the water storage on the shoulder straps, there is also an option for a water bladder which sits between the main compartment and back system and is secured by a top clip.

The pack also has two bungee sternum straps with a clip and hook closure system, which gives a lot of adjustability to make the pack work for you. However, the bungee cords can fly around unless stuffed into the soft flask pockets.

The waist belt system is unique, as it’s made from a thick high visibility Velcro strap with laser-cut holes for ventilation, zipped pockets and a large buckle. At first glance, this looks a bit odd, but it is excellent. I found it supportive, easy to function and the strap neatly tucks away too so nothing is flapping.

My only gripe is that the pack’s material is a smidge see-through which can look a bit weird but isn’t a big deal. Considering the strength of the rest of the pack I would happily overlook this.

Verdict

The Rab Veil XP 20L waterproof pack is made for moving fast in any weather, when every gram and every second counts.

Everything about this pack is quick, it’s simple to get on and adjust, access whatever you need on the go. It is so lightweight I’d be easily convinced it makes me walk faster too.

For those after a highly technical and practical pack this is a great option and it’s perfect if you like fastpacking and mixing running and hiking. At £125 it also offers excellent value for money given the breadth of outstanding features, lightweight and comfort.
