Lake District-based trail running pros INOV8 know a thing or two about disgustingly sloshy and sloppy trails – so much so, you could even say mud, bog and rain are built into the very DNA of the brand. And that bodes well when you’re shopping for a pair of waterproof trail running shoes with faultless grip over the soft stuff.
INOV8 is a mainstay brand for serious runners who aren’t deterred by mud or rain. Their trail running shoes are built for British weather and terrain, often favouring grip, durability and proprioception over plush cushioning or flashy tech.
We’ve tested a wide selection of INOV8’s trail offerings over the years, from the highly cushioned TrailFly Max to the fast and responsive classic TrailFly, and the seriously grippy X-Talon Ultra 260 V2. All of them have one thing in common: reliable grip and terrain-ready builds that feel tuned to UK trails.

For long-distance hiking, we’ve also had great success with the Roclite GTX shoe, which offers Gore-Tex protection and superb stability in a fast-and-light package.
Speaking of the brand’s Gore-Tex protection, let’s get to the shoe at hand.
The Trailtalon GTX at a glance

Meet the Trailtalon GTX, INOV8’s Gore-Tex-lined trail shoe that promises “uncompromising grip on soft surfaces such as mud”, as well as a “fully waterproof design that will keep your feet dry and warm”.
The Trailtalon family of trail shoes features three models: the Trailtalon, Trailtalon Speed and Trailtalon GTX.
The standard Trailtalon has a comfier ride for bigger mileage runs, the Speed is a lighter, more streamlined option for faster training runs or races, and the GTX version adds waterproof protection into the mix.
All three pairs come in standard and wide widths, so there’s sure to be an option to suit every foot shape.
My testing experience with INOV8

I’ve been a big fan of INOV8 footwear for over five years, no matter whether I’m hiking or running. For longer runs on harder-packed trails in spring or summer, I always favour the Trailfly.
I used it on a 109-mile, non-stop ultra-marathon on the Cleveland Way and it hit the perfect sweet spot between speed, comfort, stability and grip.
For shorter fell races or runs in super-wet and muddy conditions, I never look past the Mudtalon Speed, which is blessed with 8mm cleats for ridiculous bite.
But the newest shoe in my rotation is the Trailtalon GTX. These are my thoughts.
Performance and comfort

I’d describe the Trailtalon as more of an all-rounder compared to the specialist Trailfly and Mudtalon. It’s a really versatile shoe, suitable for a range of conditions and terrains.
Some will see that as a big strength; others might see it as a “jack of all trades, master of none” type shoe. I’m in the former camp, however.
The Gore-Tex liner keeps your feet dry, the 6mm-deep graphene outsole delivers that characteristic INOV8 grip underfoot, the Boomerang Footbed is comfy, and the Powerflow Pro midsole foam strikes a nice balance without being excessively cushioned.
Overall, the Trailtalon GTX is a tad on the heavy side for true speed, but I’ve found it an enjoyable experience. And for everyday trail running, it has proved to be a shoe I reach for time and time again.
Price and comparison
At £140, the INOV8 Trailtalon GTX sits in the middle of the waterproof trail shoe market. It’s cheaper than the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed GTX, which is more race-focused but lacks the same grip and all-round durability.
The Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 GTX, meanwhile, offers stronger lateral support and protection but is noticeably stiffer and heavier underfoot.
If you’re looking for a waterproof trail shoe that prioritises grip and versatility over pure speed or plushness, the Trailtalon GTX definitely stands out.
Verdict

A versatile trail running trainer with excellent outsole grip and great all-round performance – but other INOV8 options are more specialist.
