Designed in partnership with one of the world’s best ultra runners, the new SILVA Strive 5 Vest will inspire you to go faster, higher, and longer on your trail running adventures.

Swedish brand SILVA is synonymous with the compass. In 1933 its founders Björn, Alvar and Arvid Kjellström invented the first-ever liquid-filled compass, and so the story began. Not only was it the first compass of its kind, but it also set the global standard for how navigation works. The SILVA brand was born.

Since those early days the brand has expanded its product portfolio with headtorches, hiking poles, binoculars and backpacks, as well as (of course) an extensive selection of premium compasses. But, perhaps lesser-known, is SILVA’s range of running race vests. These ultralight and fully-featured “minimalist backpacks” for trail running have won a loyal fanbase across the globe, thanks to their clever and innovative designs. And fresh for the 2024 race season, SILVA has just released the brand new SILVA Strive 5 Vest, billing it as the ideal running vest for long-distance runs and races.

“If you’re looking to improve your designs, it’s a smart idea to call on those who use them day in, day out, in the most extreme circumstances: professional ultra-athletes.” So explains SILVA, who partnered with South Tyrolean ultra-running guru Philipp Ausserhofer for the design for the Strive 5 Vest.

Philipp, who is better-known online by his Instagram handle @theflyingflip, has won some of the world’s toughest trail races, including the Innsbruck Alpine, Dolomoti Extreme Trail and the Mozart 100. His expert input helped SILVA to develop a lighter, more ergonomic and more user-friendly race vest, using softer materials and with four ways to stash your poles.

The popular Strive 5 Vest costs £79.99. The sleek, breathable design has a 5-litre capacity and smart features for your entire trail running needs. The Strive 5 Vest is an updated version of the original bestseller, the Strive Light Black 5. The new Strive 5 Vest is 24% lighter, has an improved fit and comes in four sizes (XS, S, M, L) and two colours (black and green).

SILVA Strive 5 Running Vest features

SILVA Strive 5 Vest: key features

1. Space for all of your trail running essentials

With its 5-litre capacity, there’s enough space in the Strive 5 Vest for extra layers, a hydration bladder and snacks galore. On the front, you get two soft flask pockets with adjustable straps, two zippered pockets for valuables such as keys or a phone, and two large easy-access mesh pockets for gels and bars. The vest also has another mesh pocket at the back and a large main compartment for a hydration bladder. Or, in other words, the storage options are versatile and plentiful.

2. Seamless and versatile hiking pole storage

With the Strive 5 Vest you’ll experience the freedom of running with your running poles within easy reach. There are four removable and adjustable straps to keep your poles in place. Or, if you prefer, the vest is compatible with SILVA’s Strive Quiver (£24.99), allowing you to position the poles vertically, horizontally or crossed – the choice is yours.

3. Breathable and ultralight design, with bespoke sizing options

Made of soft ripstop nylon and breathable 3D mesh, the Strive 5 Vest offers optimal ventilation, ensuring you won’t overheat or get too sweaty. It won’t weigh you down either. The design is ultralight, clocking in at just 152g (XS), 164g (S), 179g (M) or 191g (L), thus ensuring a “soft and lightweight feel” during races. With four size options, plus several adjustable chest, shoulder and side straps, the fit can also be fine-tuned to your body shape for maximum comfort.

4. Hydration and headtorch compatibility

This race vest makes drinking on-the-go so easy. The main compartment has a “hanger” for holding a hydration reservoir in place, while the bladder hose can be threaded through outlets on both shoulders for easy access. The soft flask pockets, meanwhile, have two adjustable webbing straps to keep the flask and drinking straws in place. For your headtorch, there is an elastic pocket in the main compartment to store a remote battery, and cable outlets on the shoulders enable you to run in the dark with power all night long. You can also mount your headtorch on a chest strap.

Additional nifty design features include reflective panels for visibility in the dark, an integrated whistle for emergencies, and a key hook in one of the zippered pockets.
