FEATURES

The Mountain Equipment Odyssey is new for Spring 2016. It’s made from 3-layer Drilite, which boasts high waterproofness and breathability figures. There are two pockets and they aren’t mesh-lined, so they will keep rain out well. They are also placed high on the body for easier access while wearing a pack. You get pit zips and a hood with a wired peak. A third chest pocket would be useful though.

FIT

The men’s Odyssey comes in sizes S-XXL and the women’s in sizes 8-16. The fit is typical of many jackets so it just covers below my waist, but at least it’s not the shortest jacket around. Sleeve movement is superb, without a hint of cuff or hem movement when raising your arms. The hood fits closely and moves very well with the head, offering great vision.

COMFORT

Being just 387g the Mountain Equipment Odyssey feels light when worn, which helps with overall comfort. The material controls condensation well and you have a pair of pit zips if needed to aid moisture management. The pockets are sealed rather than mesh, so they won’t easily let water through the jacket. An internal stormflap blocks draughts from the front zip.

IN USE

Fit and comfort are great; but I’d like an extra chest pocket so I can put my hands in my pockets and have a map or GPS receiver stashed in that third pocket. But everything else about the Mountain Equipment Odyssey is ideal. The pit zips are there if you need them, but they’re neatly tucked away so you don’t notice them if not used. Great sleeve movement makes it great for scrambles.

VALUE

Much better than the lower-priced jackets and also quite light, so while it’s not cheap, the price is better than expected for the performance.

VERDICT

If you want a top-quality lighter-weight jacket with just two pockets, the Mountain Equipment Odyssey is an excellent choice for the money.
