Weaving stretch since 1972
Ever since we began our quest to revolutionise the outdoor clothing industry in 1972 we have been weaving stretch into our products. Those very first salopettes that we made had stretch in them – made from what must have been the first soft shell fabric (before anyone had dreamt up such a phrase).

The 2021 Microgrid Zip was always going to be about an incremental improvement, rather than trying to start from scratch. We have been making some type of Microgrid fleece for over ten years, and the perforated, waffle structure of the fabric gives great technical advantages along with a really soft feel. Its warmth to weight ratio is unbeatable for a fleece, it packs away tiny and it dries in a flash.
I was able to look at feedback from customers for all the different iterations of this top and to combine the most popular aspects of the look, fit and design. After incorporating these, I felt confident about achieving sure fire success. Adding stretch improves comfort, helps the thumb loops work for different body types and makes it even more suitable for the most active pursuits. It also helps with a nice snug fit if you’re using it in winter under a waterproof shell.
There really is no downside to adding stretch, and the top works perfectly. So, as they say, if you liked the old Microgrid fleece, you’re going to love this one.
