Escape the ordinary

When the clocks go back and temperatures start to plummet, for most people the adventure stops. But why? Autumn and winter aren’t just good times to explore the outdoors – in many ways they’re the perfect seasons. The days may be short and the conditions may test you, but that just adds to the adventure. The need to plan, to prepare, to compete against the elements, and to squeeze every last drop from every precious hour of daylight.

Hike into the mountains in winter and you’ll discover a landscape reborn, from the harsh crackle of morning frost beneath your feet to the ocean of white peaks waiting for you when you hit the summits. You’ll marvel at the pink blush of a Snowdonian dawn, mist-shrouded Lakeland valleys, frozen Peak District waterfalls and the roar of stags through abandoned Scottish glens, and all the while you’ll be kicking yourself for not doing this morning often.

But winter adventure isn’t all about mountains. Your local landscape will transform and toughen around you, turning those familiar summer trails into winter strangers. It’s a time to laugh with friends on deserted beaches, listen to songbirds on local woodland walks, and maybe even watch the golden burn of sunset on that first winter wild camp you’ve been putting off for so many years.

Berghaus has been helping people find their own winter adventures for over 50 years. As a world-leading outdoor brand with a history of cutting-edge innovation, Berghaus makes versatile gear that maximises your time in the outdoors by performing trip after trip.

This autumn and winter they’re encouraging you to Go Beyond by getting out there and trying something new. And if you’re looking for inspiration, here’s someone who’s been there and done it…

“I’ve discovered a whole new playground”

berghaus 2

SIMBA is an office worker with a passion for running off-road, which is what inspired his recent adventure in the Scottish Highlands.

“I’d never scrambled or set foot on a Scottish mountain before, so I took on a challenge in the Highlands to get me out of my day-to-day routine. I’ve worked at a desk in my home office bedroom for the last couple of years doing spreadsheets, and I need trips like this to make me feel alive and remind me there’s a world out there.

“I was out there with a group of six people from the Black Trail Runners community and my biggest memories are the conversations we had and the experiences we shared. There were some special moments I’ll cherish forever.

“Facing adversity is always part of the adventure. I’ve been struggling with an ankle injury this year, which kept flaring up during the run. There’s only so much you can plan for. The rest of it, you have to be resilient and solve problems that happen

on the day. That comes through practice and experience. You need to keep coming back, keep learning, and keep challenging yourself.

“On the Scotland trip I discovered a whole new trail running playground, but I don’t have all the skills to navigate it yet. So there’s another challenge. It’s a big puzzle I want to crack.”
