Country Walking, latest issue: BRITAIN’S BEST HILLS

Find out what's inside Britain's best-selling walking magazine this month

FROM MINI MARVELS TO MIGHTY MOUNTAINS: this issue of Country Walking names the finest summits at every height.

We’ve divided the hills and mountains of Britain into 100m height brackets, starting from 0-100m and going all the way up to 1300m+. And for each of those 14 divisions we’ve picked the greatest hill/mountain of the lot: the one we think deserves the love, attention and laced-up boots of the Country Walking faithful. (With, of course, full guidance on how to climb them.)

There are classics and oddballs; firm favourites and tucked-away gems. There are plenty of big names: Glastonbury Tor, Helvellyn and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon); Leith Hill, Suilven and Pen y Fan. But there are a few names that might surprise you, too. (Our pick for 0-100m is a 15m mound with one of the most remarkable stories I’ve been lucky enough to stumble across.)

And then there’s our cover star: the little Scottish hill with a view that is out of the world. You’ll know it if you’ve walked the West Highland Way, but in this issue we celebrate little old Conic Hill in its own right.

And the beauty of looking at each of those height brackets is that whatever your aspiration, whatever height you’re comfortable aiming for, there will be a hill to suit you. Here’s a sneak peek at a few of them; can you guess them from the clues?

A Lake District hill whose summit tarn has a very famous ‘resident’...
A Welsh peak that sometimes gets confused with an Alp...
A limestone reef knoll in the Peak District, sometimes known as the Dragon’s Back...
A little Scottish gem with a view that looks like it should be in Finland somewhere...
...and a Highland giant with an awesome view of Big Ben (in a manner of speaking).

So nip down to your newsagent, supermarket or local shop – or pick up the copy that has dropped through your letterbox – and find out what these all are, and most importantly, how to make them your own.
