Hiking and trekking behemoth deuter has entered the trail running market with a bang by the introduction of their new Ascender 7 and Ascender 13 running packs.

The Ascender Series currently offers two different size running packs with the deuter Lite back system, which aims to produce a pack that’s extremely lightweight, durable, and comfortable for running adventures.

The Ascender packs are made from 100% recycled materials and are Bluesign certified (eco-friendly production and ingredients), they’re available in a choice of colours including black, saffron orange and indigo blue.

deuter Ascender Series: Capacity

Starting with the all-important size, the deuter Ascender 13 is designed to be a lightweight running pack coming in at 340g without any kit inside.

That’s not to say that it’s small though, as the name suggests the pack is made to hold a huge 13 litres of gear. This makes it ideal for multi-day events, run-packing adventures and long-distance runs which require you to carry a substantial amount of gear with you.

For shorter runs, the deuter Ascender 7 is a more compact pack with a smaller seven litres volume, the pack coming in at just 315g.

deuter Ascender Series: Design

You may wonder how a pack with seven or 13 litre capacity can be comfortable to run with, that’s where the ergonomic design comes in.

Both packs have follow the same design with shoulder straps made in a vest style to sit comfortably over the shoulders without creating any pressure points, while an ‘elasticated compression system’ aims to fit the packs snugly to the body to avoid any bounce.

The Ascender packs are made to offer a ‘garment-like fit’ with two adjustable sternum straps and soft material along the back with added ‘moisture barrier’ for sweat wicking.

Along the outside of the packs sits a drawstring cinching system which aims to secure the contents even when the bags are not fully packed.

deuter Ascender Series: Pockets

Inside the Ascender packs is a large main section with smaller zip compartments and pockets, which should offer plenty of space to stash additional layers like your running jacket and secure valuables. Inside is also an elasticated inner section made for storing wet clothing or a water reservoir.

deuter says that the Ascender 13 is compatible with a 3-litre hydration system, which should cover you for longer runs between refuelling stations, while the Ascender 7 has a slightly smaller 2-litre capacity for hydration.

Meanwhile, easy-access pockets with drawstring cinch cords are set onto each strap and designed to fit two soft flask bottles, or offer extra capacity for stashing protein bars and snacks on the go. An additional zip pocket set into the shoulder strap should fit a smartphone or GPS device.

If your route requires trekking poles, both the Ascender 13 and Ascender 7 have an easy-access side pocket designed to secure the poles and bungee cords to strap them along the outside of the pack.
