33 km, three Munros and one big Cairngorms walk – by special decree of Her Majesty...

How would you feel about a weekend away with your mates, ticking off one of the most imposing and dramatic hills in Scotland and staying over at the Queen’s gaff afterwards? What if it was all for charity, too?

Walking With The Wounded organises challenges around the country in aid of physically and mentally injured veterans, and this new event takes in one of the most spectacular areas of the Cairngorms. The Balmoral Challenge, on 24 June 2017, will be based at the royal family’s Scottish home, in usually private areas of the castle grounds.

Looking back up to the summit of Lochnagar

The main event will be a test of hill strength, route choice and navigation. Starting from a secret location, you’ll find your way through forest to the 1155m summit of Lochnagar, then – after ticking off its main top and two other Munros – you’ll make your way back to base, arriving with 33km in your legs, and a lot of ascent. There’s also a more tactical trial favouring those who are savvy with a map and compass – one in which you’re given nine hours to visit as many checkpoints as you can, covering a minimum distance of 20km. A third 15km challenge explores cairns hidden in the forest above the castle. This is a task that really plays right into the hands of those with hillwalking experience, and which explores some areas of the Cairngorms you may not otherwise get to see. Then there’ll be a right old knees-up on Saturday night before you crash out in your tent, in the Balmoral Castle grounds. All of this, as well as being a cracking weekend, will go towards helping military veterans back into work.

Walking With The Wounded organises a variety of programmes, providing funding for training and education; finding accommodation for the homeless; treatment for those suffering mental distress; and intervening to help those caught up in criminal activity. So, not only do you get the simple exhilaration of being in the mountains, you also get to feel good about that. Trail’s doing it: you can too!
