Result Performance R173 Spiro Airstream 2010

The Result Performance R173 Spiro Airstream multi-activity jacket uses HydraDri waterproof and breathable fabric; large areas of reflective material; mesh lining improves comfort; hood can be removed (thankfully, as it is poor). But 870g (size L) is extremely heavy by modern standards; cut of sleeves is extremely baggy; pocket access easily obscured by rucksack belts; hood is a poor fit.

As a general outdoor jacket the Result Performance R173 Spiro Airstream would be tolerable, but it’s not a multi-activity jacket.

Result Performance R150J 2010

For £25 you get a lot of jacket as the Result Performance R150J has a fleece lining stitched inside, unlike anything else featured here. This makes it warmer than the others and therefore ideal in winter. The fabric feels pretty robust too. The front zip gets a double stormflap to keep the wind and rain out, while two huge pockets would be ideal for warming wee hands on a cold winter’s day. The hood has a volume adjuster and can be rolled into the collar. There are reflective tabs on the front of the jacket too. This jacket is a good choice for winter. But the biggest problem with the Result Performance R150J is that the jacket is heavy and bulky – which is a real drawback if the parent ends up carrying it all day! It is also very warm, which is great in winter, but not ideal for warmer weather. A separate fleece and waterproof would offer a more flexible approach. There is not much scope to fine-tune the fit either as there is no hem drawcord or cuff adjustment.

Outer PVC-coated polyester
Inner Polyester Active Fleece
Fabric waterproofness waterproof
Fabric breathability breathable
Sizes XS (3-4 years) to XXXL (15-16 years)
Weight 826g (S / 5-6 years)
Made in Far East
Stores in the UK 36

The Result Performance R150J is a low-priced kids’ jacket that is ideal for cold days, but as it is heavy and has a fleece lining it will probably not be ideal for warmer weather.

Result Performance R155J Junior 2009

The Result Performance R155J Junior is half the price of many of the children’s jackets in this review. Bargain! It comes in at a very respectable weight too and packs down small so you won’t mind carrying it for your children during dry spells. Reflective piping wraps around the whole jacket at waist level so it is easily picked out in the dark from any direction. The body has a hem drawcord to lock out draughts and a full-length front zip with an external stormflap. There are two large chest pockets that are very easy to access. The hood can be rolled down and secured at the collar, and it has a peak. The garment also contains over 25 per cent recycled materials.   But the Result Performance R155J Junior’s hood is the major drawback here though as it has no adjustment at all, and the large peak could be a problem without it. Other jackets’ hoods have elastication and volume adjustment. As it is likely that the hood will be required this is a major flaw in my view.

Outer PU-coated ripstop nylon
Inner polyester mesh
Fabric waterproofness waterproof
Fabric breathability breathable
Sizes S (5-6 years) to L (9-10 years)
Weight 322g (9-10 years)
Made in Far East
Stores in the UK 40

Verdict: If the hood fits the Result Performance R155J Junior is a bargain-priced jacket, but if not then it is worth paying more.

Result Performance R96 Trekking/Training Jacket 2008

The Result Performance R96 Trekking/Training Jacket features reflective piping; removable hood rolls into collar; mesh lining; pit zips aid ventilation; dedicated map pocket; double stormflap over main zip. But 822g (L) makes this multi-activity jacket too heavy for fast mountain action; hip pocket access easily obscured by rucksack belts; hood is terrible
Verdict
For simply walking the Result Performance R96 Trekking/Training Jacket may be okay, but even then there are better jackets .

Result Performance Carrick

The sleeves were a nice length and waist adjusters are useful on a body this long. Loses marks for the shallow hood and heavy, stiff fabric which wasn’t easy to move in. Although it weighs a ton and is very bulky in the pack, it kept some heavy rain out and will probably last a while. Not very breathable but does have a good selection of pockets.

VITAL STATS
Colours: Black/grey, mustard/navy, navy/grey, royal/black
Sizes: XS-XXXL
Fabric: Ripstop Taslon with PU coating
Key features: Taped seams, adjustable hood, drawcord waist, storm flap, multi-pockets
Weight: 1,015g
Women’s version: Unisex

Verdict: A jacket to be worn every day, but definitely not one to bury in the bottom of the rucksack in case of a shower. Better for less strenuous walking.

Result Performance Carrick

This general-purpose waterproof jacket has a longer style than some, which just about allows access to base pockets while wearing a rucksack; mesh lining adds comfort; two map-sized chest pockets; low price is main attraction. But 1130g is very heavy; fabric is very stiff; wraparound chin sections flap about unless battened down; hood does not move with the head as well as others.

Verdict: The low price is the only attraction here, but try and spend more if you can as you’ll get a much better jacket

Result Performance Waterproof 2000 Pro Coach

This lightweight waterproof weighs 468g (size L); polyester mesh lining adds comfort; reflective piping; chest pockets are accessible while wearing a rucksack.
But the hood fit and movement is unbelievably bad; higher price will mean more breathable fabric, lighter designs and more features.

Verdict: The hood is crying out for a redesign and lets the whole jacket down.
