If you are tired of the skimpy, lightweight offerings that most manufacturers design then you may well like this robust, functional winter jacket. It is made from Gore-Tex Performance Shell, with a mesh lining. It’s much more of a traditional design than others we looked at, with double stormflaps over all zips to keep rain out. It is long enough to cover your bottom and keep you dry when seated. There is good movement in the sleeves too if you’re going to be scrambling. Four chest pockets provide ample storage protection for the hands. The hood is a removable rollaway design with a wired peak. Use this for general walking and it could be ideal for many walkers and backpackers. But it is very heavy by modern standards, so you need to consider if you need all the extras or would prefer something lighter and more compact. The hood does not fit as closely or move with the head as well as others. The hood also has wraparound chin protection, which has to be fastened to prevent it from flapping around. The flaps can be tucked into little pockets, but they don’t stay there long.
