Uniquely, this top is designed in a smock-style, which harks back to the uncluttered designs of climbing kit. The result is a top with minimal stitching and fuss to impede its technical ability to shed water and breathe. As an emergency waterproof to throw on in a sudden downpour it’s great. The 3-layer eVENT waterproofing does make it more substantial than that, though. As well as having great breathability, it’s hard-wearing too, and you should be able to get away with this all year round. Both in warmer spring conditions and on snowy Lakeland peaks it performed incredibly well. The cut is sporty, with a slightly shorter torso than some. The smock design may put a few off too, but the main zip is so long there’s no trouble getting in and out of it and it also helps vent the top really well on long ascents.
