This waterproof jacket from Blacks is a shorter cut than most, which won’t suit those who prefer traditional longer styles. The hem is easily adjusted by drawcords in the pockets and the cuffs use both Velcro and elastic – perfect. Sadly though, the hood is too shallow to go comfortably over a hat. The waterproof zips are also quite fiddly to operate. This jacket was tested in pretty horrendous weather and came through quite well. It certainly keeps the rain out and apart from the small hood – which leaves your face exposed – keeps you pretty cosy. The Hydrotec fabric doesn’t breathe as well as some, with a definite build-up of sweat in the sleeves.
Verdict: Have no qualms about using it for general low-level walking, but you’d want a better hood in the mountains.
