Peter Storm Merino Base Layer Top (2012)

A lightweight, unfussy top that combines merino and polyester fibres to help keep the costs down whilst benefiting from the properties of both materials. It does wick away sweat well, and it dries fast, however it is thin, and is better-suited to warmer conditions or with more layers on top. Against the skin there is enough merino in contact to provide a soft feel and there is plenty of stretch in the fabric. For a couple of days out on the hill, the smell quotient isn’t too bad either, with the natural odour-suppressing properties of the merino doing its job. The low key design of the top allows it to function well, with a snug-fitting, lightweight fabric and no zips or too much stitching to get in the way.

Peter Storm Merino Base Layer Crew (2012)

A really lightweight merino base-layer, with a bit of added polyester. It feels great next to the skin – soft, itch-free and not too tight – and even though the fabric is quite thin, it does a great job of trapping warmth. As you’d expect from a combination of polyester and merino, it’s very breathable and wicks away sweat really well, keeping you dry and comfortable all day long. Even though there’s a bit of polyester in the mix, it will take a fair amount of wear before it starts to pong. Wash cold to prevent shrinkage, but you can chuck it in the machine with everything else. To help make it last longer, wear it next to the skin underneath outer layers, rather than directly underneath a pack.

Peter Storm Active Base Layer

This Peter Storm base-layer felt like a T-shirt when on, an old favourite of a T-shirt at that, with a pleasantly soft touch to the fabric. In use the top performed better than anticipated, and although it often left a sweat patch on the lumbar region, it seemed no worse than some wool tops. After a single use, the typical polyester stench wasn’t present and it kept reasonably fresh for a couple of days of use. The basic cut is simple enough, with little to get in the way of the fabric’s performance, which makes it suitable for most occasions. It manages to wick fairly well, and dried out in slightly better time than some of the wool tops, but not as swiftly as 100% polyester base-layers. It won’t win any prizes for style, but the decent enough performance is matched by a great price.

Peter Storm Active LS base layer

Review: A warm and heavy top, and as such it worked well on its own in milder conditions. As a base it is a bit too hefty beneath a snug soft shell, and it also held on to moisture longer than most, which could be because of the very high (50%) cotton content. It felt quite soft against the skin and had enough stretch to enable easy movement, and didn’t retain much odour. Good halfway house but not the best technically.

Peter Storm Micro Half-Zip

Baggy plain fleece cuffs let down an otherwise nicely-fitting top that boasts a superb snug,
high collar and a good-length hem. The fabric feels warm and soft against the skin. A warm top that works well both as a mid-layer and base-layer. The zip is a useful length, making it easy enough to get on and off and aiding ventilation.
