A light insulated duvet that benefits from some very useful features, the Roan GoLite Roan Plateau 800 Hooded Jacket uses top-quality down and this is packed into a durable ripstop nylon outer. At 572g this is lighter than some lower-priced options yet it still has a hood. Putting the jacket on, it feels reasonably warm, but not as warm as the lowest-priced finalists. A really nice touch is the use of stretch knit cuffs linings that provide a very snug and comfy fit to lock in warm air and lock out draughts. There is a bit of extra length in the body here too, which would be of benefit to taller users who may find other jackets a little short. The hood gets a volume adjuster, which provides an incredibly good fit as well as excellent movement. For even more comfort there is a brushed fleece lining in the pockets and around the collar. ‘Extremely comfortable’ is the best way to sum up this duvet! But for use off the hill, the GoLite Roan Plateau’s lack of a removable hood will be a drawback for some. While the cuff linings lock in warm air they could make the sleeves a little too warm sometimes as some venting is occasionally useful. Most importantly though this is not as warm as some lower-priced jackets, and in full winter conditions on a British mountain I’d want something warmer for sitting around in.
