Keela Lightning (2014)

The Keela Lightning trousers weigh in at just 268g (size 34, regular length) and have more features than many options with higher price tags. You get an elasticated waist as usual, but also belt loops, press stud tab closure and a zip fly, which all help to make these a little more user-friendly. There are two slit pockets that allow access to your undergarment pockets. My preference would be for there to be no slit pockets at all, but at least these have press studs to keep the rain out. Surprisingly at this price the knees are articulated so they sit closer to the leg, which is a welcome addition. The lower leg has 34cm long zips, so these can fit over boots easier. You also get two reflective Velcro adjuster tabs to adjust the shape of the lower leg and to hold the external stormflap closed over the zip. The Lightning is made from Keela’s Rainlife 2000, which is a coated ripstop nylon. As with other low-priced options you may get a fabric with a higher performance for more cash. There’s no lining, so the Keela Lightnings do feel a little clammier than others, but if you wear good synthetic trousers underneath this isn’t so much of a problem.

Material Rainlife

Lining none

Men’s sizes 28-44 plus 3 leg lengths

Women’s sizes none

Weight 268g (size 34, reg length)

The Keela Lightning lightweight trousers are very well-priced for the features, although you’ll get higher-performance fabrics if you spend more.
