These are an excellent and reasonably-priced pair of waterproof overtrousers that it will be hard to go wrong with. Berghaus has got its priorities right and built in all the necessary features to make a reliable, functional, well-cut overtrouser. The trousers are constructed from Gore-Tex and as a result should be extremely breathable. They have a three-quarter-length zip to ensure that getting them on and off in the rain and mud is as easy as possible. The zips are also backed up with stormflaps both inside and out to make certain the rain does not work its way in. To ensure water is not blown underneath the stormflaps, they are further secured by press studs. These press studs also allow the zips to double as vents, which is extremely important if you are working hard on the hill. Press studs are also used on the ankle cuff to allow adjustment to be made if required, which is the preferred method to Velcro, as press studs are less likely to become clogged with mud. The waist has both elastication and a good-sized draw cord to ensure they stay up easily. But although these are not the heaviest trousers featured in this review, there are lighter options. Most people won’t wear overtrousers until they get caught in a downpour, and so with this in mind the best combination is probably a lighter-weight fabric and a full-length zip so they can be put on easily and quickly. These trousers will not pack as small as some either. So the Berghaus trousers are not ideal.
