Páramo’s best-selling trousers work a little differently to all other brands tested here. The Cascadas can be considered waterproof as their Nikwax Analogy fabric works to actively pump water (sweat included) from the inside to the outside. This means their heavier weight (528g) is more than made up for as you don’t having to carry waterproof trousers, which generally weigh about 450g. You can renew and prolong their waterproof qualities easily by washing them in a reproofer from Nikwax, Granger’s or similar. They are incredibly comfy – you could almost wear them as pyjamas – and the mid-thigh zip makes them easy to get on over boots while the poppers behind allow you to adjust the zip for ventilation. Páramo makes these in an incredible range of sizes and leg lengths, and we defy you not to fit a pair! But for me the heavyweight fabric relegates the Cascada to winter, despite the leg vents. They are not stretchy like the other trousers here, but articulated knees and baggy cut give enough freedom of movement. The slightly baggy styling may not appeal to the more style-conscious.

Verdict: Páramo’s Cascada offer incredible comfort, warmth and breathability for winter at a good price and weight (as you don’t need waterproof trousers).
