Fjallraven Nils Trousers (2012)

The heaviest and priciest trousers tested, but there’s little doubting the quality or toughness. The design is casual, with open-topped hip pockets and a huge cargo pocket that was great for a map, but no elastic in the waist. There’s an option to buy them ‘raw’, enabling you to adjust the hem to your leg-length. They are made with the brand’s G-1000 fabric, a cotton-polyester mix which resists wind, UV and thorns, and swells when damp to provide variable waterproofing. You can increase that by coating seams and openings with Greenland wax, also made by the company. In the hills they performed very well, offering good comfort and movement. They shed a good amount of water before wetting out, but didn't dry as quickly as some.
