The North Face Roadrunner

For many campers  this 2-person backpacking tent this will be the best choice. It is pitched inner-first, although you can pitch the flysheet on its own. The dome shape is very good at fending off winds from many directions. Inside you get acres of space with more useable headroom than some  others in this class. You also get two entrances and two porches. The entrances are well designed too with doors that can be opened from the top. Each porch is large enough for a big rucksack or you could cram two rucksacks in one and use the spare porch as a kitchen – luxury! The inner is made with lots of mesh and this makes the tent very cool in summer conditions. But at 2680g this is not the lightest. The predominantly mesh inner is great in warm weather but in a blustery cold day in the UK you may prefer less air flow. The tent is pitched inner-first too, which is a disadvantage in wet weather. The flysheet is rated as having a 1500mm hydrostatic head, which is lower than most rivals, so in the long term the level of waterproofness will be less durable.

Verdict: Buy it if you want plenty of space for sitting out a storm and good air flow for warm weather.
