Most tarps are a simple square of fabric with no protection against midges, but the Terra Nova Bivvy Tarp benefits from a mesh inner tent, making it more of a hybrid bivvy-tent-tarp design as its name suggests. The inner and tarp fly come preassembled so you just need to fit the two supplied poles and peg out the guy lines to create the shelter. There’s a waterproof floor, again something most tarps aren’t supplied with, and you get everything you need in the package, unlike most tarps that need additional guy lines, pegs and trekking poles to allow them to be pitched. The shelter is only large enough for one person though and at 695g it is far heavier than the more basic tarps, but it’s still very light compared to a tent – although for £200 you may prefer to buy a lightweight tent! Superb in terms of providing a lightweight bivvy in midge-infested areas.

The Terra Nova Bivvy Tarp is the best choice for midge protection in our buyer’s guide.
