Simplicity, functionality and bombproof fabric with triple-stitched seams make the PodSacs Roc Sac a finalist. This rucksack has a medium length back and shoulder straps to fit a narrower person’s profile, which are stable enough for day walks. The no-frills design weighs in at under 1000g, with useful bungee front storage and side compression straps. The hipbelt is unpadded, but the wide strap means it is comfier for any size of bum, more even than some of the less well-designed padded hipbelts on some other sacks that have uncomfy stitching or shaping. There is no hydration bladder slot, but this isn’t necessarily a drawback as a full sack of gear will keep it in place. But the top pocket zip opening in the lid would benefit from widening, and elastic loops higher up the sack would be better than the central bungee for securing poles or ice axes. Elasticated wand pockets would also be a bonus for easy-access snacks, and more of a contoured, women’s fit shoulder strap would work better for smaller ladies.
