Deuter Futura Pro 42 2011

If you prefer plenty of storage options, the Deuter Futura Pro 42 is the sack for you – as it has four external pockets. There are two side bellows pockets that allow the sack to be narrow and neat if you want to go scrambling, but which can be opened out when you’re walking – ideal for holding water bottles, hat and gloves. The front pocket and lid pocket are both useful for maps and guidebooks, and there’s a hydration pocket inside. There are two compartments, but you can zip out the divider to make one internal space. There’s a 70g rain cover in the base that can be removed to save weight, as this sack is a little heavier than most at 1700g. But you do get a back mesh panel to hold the sack away from your body for improved airflow.
I’m not sure the hipbelt is as good as on some other sacks, and you don’t get an adjustable back or different backlength options, but the Deuter Futura Pro 42’s price is excellent and the features are well designed.

The Deuter Futura Pro 42 is superb if you like lots of pockets, but while the price is good for what you get, the weight is not as attractive.
