The Deuter ACT Trail 32 and the ACT Trail 28 SL for women (£85) are extremely popular and well-proven, thanks to their robust design, which provides the essential features for the hillwalker. The back panel is stiff enough to allow carefree packing without fear of ‘barrelling’ taking place, while a pair of vertical padded panels holds the sack away from the wearer to allow greater airflow. The body of the sack has a single main compartment, but this does not have a deep snow-lock extension, which is not ideal. The lid has a single buckle closure, which does not cover the main opening as well as others, while the external lid pocket is quite small compared to some options. There’s a deep and durable wand pocket on one side of the pack, and when combined with a compression strap this is ideal for trekking poles. On the other side there’s a zipped side pocket that’s ideal for a water bottle, while the front of the Deuter ACT Trail 32 features a compression pocket that is great for stashing a jacket between showers. An unusual additional feature is a front panel zip opening to allow access to the base of the main compartment.
