Timberland has a track record of producing environmentally responsible gear and in 2007 the company introduced its Green Index labelling so that each product can be compared on the basis of its environmental impact. The Washington Summit Mid features a Vibram sole that includes a percentage of recycled material combined with a leather upper for comfort outdoors.
The Washington Summit Mid is a leather boot as are the others here, but it does not have a waterproof lining. The upper is very stitch-free though so there is not much potential for the boot to leak, however this does mean the upper will need treating with Granger’s or Nikwax products to keep it more water-resistant. The upper is a mid-cut ankle height like the others here. The upper is quite soft but there is more support in the heel cup to help keep the foot in place on uneven terrain. The sole performs well thanks to its good set of lugs that help to maintain grip without getting clogged up with mud.
On the hill
The Timberland Washington Summit Mid is a boot that needs proofing regularly with leather treatments, but it’s an easy job to do as there are not many seams to work the liquid products into. Once treated the upper is very comfortable and kept my feet dry without any problems. The outsole grips pretty well and there is a good heel breast too for slightly better braking downhill in the mud. The foot sits nice and low to the ground in this boot so I found that every step felt impressively stable. It is a comfy boot on paths and bridleways, and even on rocky paths it resists pressure quite well from rocks underfoot. But it is still essentially a boot for easier terrain I feel as the toe box is quite soft and there is not much support in the upper or the sole once you get onto really rocky ground. So this is a boot that will excel on paths in areas where you are not going to be getting it saturated every day. How it functions for you higher up the hill will depend on your liking for stiffer boots. There is a Gore-Tex lined version for £110, which some may prefer.

The Timberland Washington Summit Mid is a relatively light boot; recycled materials in sole; Green Impact rated; leather upper is stitch-free for maximum water resistance and durability; good outsole lug pattern; very comfortable straight from the box. But very soft upper; soft toe box and soft sole flex means this boot provides less protection and support on rockier ground; no waterproof lining. In summary, it’s a good general walking boot but the uppers need reproofing regularly to keep feet dry and on rockier ground this is less comfortable than some others
