Scarpa Delta GTX Activ (2015)

For long-term durability a leather upper with minimal stitching can generally be expected to be the best option in my experience. With the Scarpa Delta GTX Activ you also get a Gore-Tex waterproof lining and a rubber rand on the toe box for extra protection. Underfoot there is an aggressive Vibram sole unit with superb stiffness and a good set of deep lugs. 5/5

The Scarpa Delta GTX Activ is available in sizes 41-48 for men and 37-42 for women. The fit is neat and precise with the ActivFit Technology, meaning the boot fits and feels comfortable straight from the box. There was good toe room and generally the boot felt spacious for my bony feet. The ankle cuff was also neat and precise and benefited from extra softness. 5/5

The Scarpa Delta GTX Activ is quite stiff compared to many lighter options, which is ideal for the hill, but it may take a little more breaking in than some. But if you’re used to stiff boots it may well feel superb instantly. Good flex at the toe allows easy walking, while the sole is stiff enough to provide support. A soft ankle cuff adds to the comfort. 5/5

On the hill the Scarpa Delta GTX Activ is just about the perfect 3-season boot for rockier ground and mountain backpacking. The stiffness in the upper and sole makes it ideal for uneven rockier ground, while the heel breast and depth of well-spaced lugs allow it to keep a grip on softer ground. There is a precision of performance that nudges this boot above its competitors. 5/5

Leather boots with this sort of performance are never cheap, but considering what you get this price is acceptable. 3/5

For long-term fell and mountain walking performance, Scarpa’s Delta GTX Activ is one of the best. 4.6/5
