The Mammut (formerly Raichle) Mount Trail XT has been a frequent favourite of Trail’s when provided by the manufacturer as a 3-season boot, and it was ‘Best in Test’ in May 2009. However it has now been submitted by the manufacturer for inclusion in the 3-4 season category. The boot features a solidly built leather upper that is not one piece, but it has minimal stitching. There is a Gore-Tex waterproof inside too, to guarantee dry feet. To improve durability you get a rubber rand around the toe. When the boot is on the foot the boot feels great and gives a very comfortable ride. Underfoot there is a very aggressive sole unit that is ideal for getting a grip in mud and hacking across scree. The sole stiffness is ideal for backpacking, walking and scrambling below the snowline on rough mountain terrain. The price is stunning at just £10 up on that of spring 2009. So this is definitely great value compared to some other boots. But while the Mammut Mount Trail XT is ideal below the snowline and certainly best in its class, others are much better above the snow because this boot is not quite stiff enough for 3-4 season use when a little extra performance is needed on snow.

The Mammut Mount Trail XT is one of the best 3-season boots out there, but a stiffer boot will be better for use on snow.
