The Renegade is a conservative-looking shoe but those staid looks belie impressive performance in the field which is anything but dull. The nubuck upper looks good and works well and also sheds water quickly, giving the Gore-Tex liner less to do. The lacing needs some tweaking to get it right but holds the foot perfectly once it’s there, even though the fit is quite wide. The midsole is a great compromise between feel and stiffness and is about spot-on for all-round walking on the kind of terrain most people would wear a shoe on. Shock absorption is good and the tread pattern dealt with most surfaces well. It’s got a fair bit of padding, and this plus the amount of leather in the upper does make it a bit heavy.
