Lomer Tofana / Gardena MTX 2011

This is a remarkable price for the Lomer Tofana / Gardena MTX – a boot with a quality leather upper that is not only virtually stitch-free to maximise durability but also gives you a waterproof lining to keep your feet dry even if you don’t look after the upper properly. There is plenty of stiffness in the upper too, so this is ideal for tackling rockier hills and mountains in the UK or trekking abroad. Underfoot you get  a Vibram sole unit with a very deep pattern of lugs for grip and durability, and these are widely spaced to prevent mud from clogging up the sole. All that comes together for a weight of 1636g (pair, size 11), which is pretty good for the features and performance on offer. Add in the price of £100 and this is clearly the best-value boot in this test. But the Lomer Tofana / Gardena MTX is a fairly boring traditional brown leather boot, so if you want a little more style then you need to look elsewhere. The boot is comfortable enough but you’ll get more comfort at higher prices and with less supportive and less functional footwear. You don’t get a Gore-Tex waterproof lining either, which may offer better breathability.

Upper full-grain leather; Mertex waterproof lining
Sole Vibram Baltra

Weight 1636g (pair, size 11)

The Lomer Tofana / Gardena MTX is a great boot for valley, hill and mountain walks but the compromise at this price is a traditional style and a traditional level of comfort. It won the ‘Best Value’ accolade in our test.
