The Columbia Youth Switchback Mid 2 Omni-Tech’s low-cut ankle cuff ensures comfort from the box while an Omni-Tech waterproof lining keeps the feet dry. There is good protection at the toe as well. Underfoot there is a reasonable pattern of lugs for grip and some reasonable stiffness for taking the stress out of uneven terrain. But there is no heel breast to provide extra braking on descents. Also the mesh upper is not likely to be as durable as a leather or suede upper if the wearer treats their footwear roughly. A boot with a higher ankle cuff than the Columbia Youth Switchback Mid 2 Omni-Tech would help prevent water getting in.

The Columbia Youth Switchback Mid 2 Omni-Tech is a useful shoe for valley and good path use, but others may be better on more challenging ground.
