Aku SL Pro Leather 2010

The Aku SL Pro Leather is a traditionally styled boot with a simple leather upper with minimal stitching for extra durability. You get a Gore-Tex waterproof lining too and the rubber rand for extra protection. The ankle cuff is a good height for general use and it has the benefit of a neoprene gaiter to help stop debris entering the top of the boot. The Vibram sole provides good stiffness for general use, although it is a touch softer than the Scarpa Manta, which does allow for an easier walking action below the snow. The Vibram sole also has a smooth ‘climbing zone’ under the toe to improve performance when climbing. This a good winter boot that would be great for general winter walking on the British hills as well as easier mountaineering trips. But the Vibram Mulaz sole has a shallower pattern of lugs than other sole units, which makes it better for climbing, but it does not offer the same level of grip on snow as other units. This boot is also quite heavy compared to what else is around. The flex is a little softer at the toe than some options so the Aku SL Pro Leather is not quite so good for climbing as stiffer boots.

The Aku SL Pro Leather is a good boot for general winter mountaineering, but it’s a little heavier than the competition.
