SteriPen Adventurer Opti (2013)

The Adventurer Opti is one of a long line of devices from Steripen that use ultraviolet (UV) light to treat water. Delivered in the form of a glowing glass wand, this disrupts the DNA function of microbes so they can’t reproduce and make you ill. At just 103g and around 15.5cm long, the unit is light and compact. It features a button-activated UV lamp that allows the user to treat 1 litre or 0.5 litres of water held in a water bottle (not supplied). The energy source is two CR123 batteries, which provide enough power to perform 100 treatments of 0.5 litres of water. You simply collect some water in a bottle, switch on the SteriPen Adventurer Opti and immerse the device’s UV bulb in the water. After 50 seconds for 0.5 litres (90 seconds for 1 litre) the lamp will switch off and the water should be safe to consume. A green indicator light comes on to confirm the treatment was successful; a red LED illuminates if the dose wasn’t successful. One drawback is that it doesn’t filter out debris, but for convenience when travelling the SteriPen Adventurer Opti is very hard to beat.

Filter type ultraviolet
Effectiveness bacteria, parasites, viruses
Flow rate 0.6 litres per minute
Service life 8,000 hours (lamp life)
Size 15.5x2.5x4cm Weight 103g

The SteriPen Adventurer Opti is the best water treatment option for convenience that we looked at.
