Platypus Big Zip SL (2013)

The Platypus Big Zip SL is named after its opening/closure design. The top of the bladder snaps together like a sandwich bag, folds over, and is kept in place with a slide-on lock, making it very secure. However, despite this design being capable of it, Platypus hasn’t made the opening wide enough to get a hand inside, a fact which makes it harder to clean and is a bit of an own goal for the Big Zip. Nonetheless, the rest of the bladder is extremely well thought out. The quick-release hose attachment means the bladder can be filled without having to remove the hose from your pack, and makes cleaning the mouthpiece and pipework much easier. The bite valve is excellent and easily locked to stop drips, although the lack of a mouthpiece cover is a bit of a disappointment. However, the Platypus Big Zip SL does come with a clip that allows the hose to be attached to almost any part of your rucksack or even clothing. These features, along with the clean taste of the water, make this a great choice.

Capacity 2 litres
Dry weight 168g
Material polyurethane/polyethylene
Other sizes 1.8 litres, 3 litres

Smart design, good features and a great taste. If the Platypus Big Zip SL could be cleaned more easily and came with a mouthpiece cover, it might be perfect.
