Winter Skills in the Cairngorms with Trail magazine

Pick up the February 2013 issue of Trail magazine and you'll find several pages dedicated to staying safe in the mountains.

It's perhaps and obvious statement, but staying safe in the hills is both more important and more difficult during the winter months. Conditions often dictate that even familiar territory will require a completely different skill set to tackle it when it's covered in snow and the temperature is well below freezing.

To ensure they were equipped with the necessary skills, last winter Trail writers Dan Aspel and Ben Weeks were sent to Scotland to learn the basics of using crampons and ice axes, as well as simply moving over snow and ice covered terrain.

This video is a brief clip of their time in the Cairngorms and includes a first person perspective of an ice axe arrest.

For full details of the trip along with several 'how to' guides to crampon and ice axe use, pick up the February 2013 issue of Trail magazine - on sale from Thursday 27th December.
