Spring is here and it's time get your walking boots on. Here are 9 invigorating spring walks from across the UK that will blow away the winter cobwebs.
As the days lengthen and the natural world awakens, something stirs within us all. It's a restlessness that craves fresh spring air, hearty exercise and a landscape that stirs the soul. We have chosen 9 of our favourite routes that will inspire you to get walking.
1. Bracklinn Falls and Callander Crags, The Trossachs
This is a challenging walk with the rewards of waterfalls, woodlands, cairns and crags. You cross the Bracklinn Falls, climb steadily, cross Keltie Water, pass Scouts Pool and waterfall and eventually reach Callander Crags. Here, you are rewarded with spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of Ben Ledi and Ben Lomond to the north and Stirling Castle and the Wallace monument to the southeast.
Distance: 4 miles/6 miles
2. Glen Loin and Coiregrograin, Arrochar, Argyll and Bute
A long but relatively easy walk through the foothills of the 'Arrochar Alps'. This is a well-signposted route along which you can safely bring the family and the dog. Starting out at the Loch Long car park in Arrochar, it affords you views of the still snow-capped summits of Ben Vorlich, Ben Vane, Beinn Ime, Beinn Narnain and A' Chrois.
Distance: 11 miles
3. Heart-stopping Heartbeat country
A walk that might be described as cinematic, taking in Heartbeat country and Harry Potter film locations as well as windswept moorland, tumbling waterfalls and stunning views of the countryside. Starting out at Mallyan Spout Hotel, you go over hills and valleys into Goathland, otherwise known as Aidensfield, from Heartbeat. If you are lucky, you may see a steam train pulling into the station at Goathland. If it brings to mind a scene from Harry Potter that's because it doubles as Hogsmeade station. It is worth saving this Yorkshire walk for late summer when the moorland heather is in bloom.
Distance: 6 Miles
4. Take the rail trail to Whitby
This bracing North Yorkshire coastal walk is a happy consequence of Dr. Beeching's railway cuts in the 1960s. The railway line that ran along the coastline from Scarborough to Whitby is now a popular bike and walkway. You can walk the full 21 miles or pick up the trail in Robin Hood's Bay and finish at Whitby. Stop awhile at the magnificent Larpool Viaduct for breathtaking views of the river Esk and Whitby harbour and Abbey.
Distance: 21 Miles from Scarborough or 8 miles from Robin Hood's bay
Profile: Family friendly and dog friendly
5. Walk in Robin Hood's Footsteps, Sherwood Forest
A springtime walk in the woods is one of life's great pleasures and Sherwood Forest is one of Britain's most famous woods. This is a 5.5 mile wander through Robin Hood country as nature is in full swing around you. In the air, spot goshawks, lesser-spotted woodpeckers, tree creepers and nuthatches, and underfoot in the dappled spring sunlight, wild garlic, primroses, wood anemones and bluebells. And of course, don't miss the world famous Great Oak, bursting into springtime leaf.
Distance: 5.5 miles
6. High Meadow Woods and the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean
The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire is one of the UK's great ancient forests and the Wye Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This walk offers spectacular views of the River Wye and takes you through three counties and two countries! The highlight is Yat Rock viewpoint, with sweeping views of the Wye Valley and a chance to see the famous cliffside peregrine falcons who will be tending their chicks during April and May.
Distance: 12 miles
7. The Little Ouse Riverside walk, Norfolk
This long but easy going Norfolk walk starts in Thetford town and follows the Little Ouse River, thorough Thetford Forest to Brandon, where you can explore the Country Park with its lakeside lawns and walled garden. As you walk along the riverside, look out for dazzling damselflies and dragonflies and maybe even a shy otter. It is a linear walk and you can catch the bus or train back.
Distance: 9 Miles
8. Beacon and Old Winchester Hills on the South Downs
Bathed in spring sunlight, the verdant rolling landscape of the South Downs is England at its most pleasing. This 10.5 mile Hampshire walk, starting at the foot of Beacon Hill, takes in the stunning Meon Valley and part of the South Downs way and includes two hills, heart-stirring country views, ancient monuments and thatched English villages. It's almost too perfect to be real!
Distance: 10.5 miles
9. Duloe Stone Circle, Cornwall
Starting in the little village of Herodsfoot, just south of Liskeard, this is a heritage walk. Look out first for the Herodsfoot tin and silver mine stacks, dating back to the 18th Century. The war memorial situated here shows Herodsfoot is a "thankful village" - all came back from both world wars. Head down the valley taking in the views and spotting buzzards overhead. Make your way up to Duloe village and beyond for the 4,500 year old Stone Circle. You can return down the valley along a pleasant stretch of riverbank, having viewed a glimpse of Cornwall's long history.
