Simon Ingram's Kili kit list

Hi all Following some requests from LFTOers keen to see my kit list from Kilimanjaro, Ive finally pulled my finger out and done one!

I climbed the mountain by the Machame Route in February. Days were fine in the morning, stormy/snowy/rainy every afternoon and cool to freezing at night.

Night temperature in the high camps was around minus 5 deg C.

Temperature on the summit in the wind was minus 676 deg C. Give or take. (I dont know the true temperature but with wind chill, it was damn cold. Think Cairngorms in winter.)

This is as much as I can remember; and it is by no means a perfect, take-this-and-youll-be-absolutely-fine list!

Some of it wasnt used, some of it isnt available any more and some of it I wouldnt take again, but its what I took and I cannot lie! For the record I was pretty comfortable. Except for the below.

If I was doing the trip again I would take two extra pairs of gloves and/or some mountaineering overmitts for the summit night, nicer toilet paper and more waterproof bags for the stuff in my duffel sack.

I would also take a sunhat, some glucose sweets for the last day and consider a marginally warmer sleeping bag and a waterproof cover for it, as condensation can be a problem in higher camps.

Finally if youre taking a Platypus or CamelBak, take a mouthpiece cover and a thermal sleeve.

Your water will freeze on the last day, and on every other day every time you put your rucksack down the mouthpiece WILL fall on the floor and it WILL get dirty. And you will not like the taste of Kili dirt.

Have fun!

I have star rated the kit as regards its indispensability on my Kili trip NOT how good it is. (***** = Indispensable; * = not used)
