Pen y Gadair

The ‘chair’ of ancient giant Idris, Cadair is another mountain steeped in mythology. Legend says anyone who spends a night on its summit will descend either a poet or a madman – or will die atop the mountain. The Cadair Idris massif is home to one of the best scrambles south of Scotland – the Cyfrwy Arête – as well as the magnificent horseshoe of Craig Cwm Amarch, highest point Pen y Gadair – and the creepiest little summit shelter in Wales.

Best route: The most dramatic approach is from the north, giving fine aspects on the Cyfrwy Arête and the steep northern cliffs.
