Kahtoola Microspikes (2012)

Originally designed for running on snow and ice, the Kahtoola Microspikes have proved their worth for walkers who are looking for a little more performance than pavement or commuter traction devices can offer. They comprise of a rubber cradle that comes in five sizes to fit over footwear. There is a chain frame underfoot that allows areas of the footwear outsole to be exposed to provide further traction. There are then 10 spikes located across the sole that provide the grip. These spikes are 1cm deep and they’re quite sharp so they can bite into hard ice better than most other devices here. But as these spikes are not as long as full crampons their grip is still limited. Also the chains sometimes come into contact with hard, uneven ice before the spikes do, which can lead to a slip, so care is still required especially when the ground becomes more uneven or the snow gets deeper.
