Rab Bergen/Vidda 2010

A very popular general-purpose jacket that is becoming a modern classic, the Rab Bergen (the women’s version is the Vidda) is made from eVent fabric, so it offers top levels of waterproof and breathable performance. The front zip gets an external stormflap to help keep the rain out, and the pockets are sealed on the inside to prevent rain leaking through to the wearer. The pockets can also be easily accessed while wearing a rucksack and are big enough to accommodate maps. The hood is excellent and can be either rolled down and secured at the collar or worn on the head where its wired peak, volume adjuster and face drawcords provide an impressive fit with good movement. Freedom of movement in the sleeves is as good as the best, and the fabric feels a little more durable than some lighter jackets too. For the price it is very good value too, making it an obvious choice for most walkers. But the body is slightly shorter than some, so those who prefer long jackets won’t find this ideal. There are lighter options and also jackets with more pockets. Mesh pockets would make the jacket lighter and provide more airflow too if that is your preference over water resistance.

The Rab Bergen/Vidda is a superb jacket for hill-walking and backpacking if you don’t mind the shorter design. It won ‘Best in Test’ in our 2010 general jackets review.
