This multi-activity jacket has been a Trail favourite for many years, and for winter 2007 it is down from £200 to just £160. The Firefly weighs in at 360g (men’s size L). It is made from extremely waterproof and extremely breathable Paclite fabric. The jacket is a good length for most activities with a slightly scooped tail, and benefits from excellent freedom of movement in the sleeves. There are three cavernous chest pockets that all swallow OS maps with ease, and these can easily be accessed while wearing a rucksack, making this ideal for mountain sport as well as mountaineering. The hood rolls down to the collar, which makes this jacket even more useful for biking or climbing. On the head the hood provides a superb fit with outstanding movement, plus a wired peak. But as this is made of Paclite, you tend to notice the condensation more than the 3-layer eVent fabrics or Gore Pro Shell. There is no reflective piping on this so this is not ideal for evening mountain biking. The front zip only gets a single stormflap and this isn’t Velcroed down, so water may creep in. Some may prefer the extra ventilation that mesh pockets could offer.
