Bushbaby Ripstop Waterproof 2009

Made from PU-coated ripstop nylon, the Bushbaby Ripstop Waterproof offers the basic features needed to stay dry at a competitive price. This children’s jacket has a full-length zip with a stormflap over the outside to keep the worst of the rain out. The cuffs have Velcro adjustment to lock out the wind and rain too. The hood is a fixed design with a large peak, elastication around the face, and volume adjustment at the back. You also get two small hip pockets that are not zipped but do have a fleece lining for extra comfort. Reflective piping extends across the front and back of the shoulders of the jacket so that it can be seen from any direction in the dark. The price makes this particularly attractive, but the features are good for staying dry outdoors too.  But the Bushbaby Ripstop Waterproof has no lining, so any condensation that does form will make this jacket less comfortable than some other options with mesh linings. Other jackets have hem drawcords to adjust the fit a little so that draughts can be locked out while children grow into the jacket. The hood peak is very large, so it may obscure vision easily. The hood cannot be removed or rolled into the collar and secured.

Verdict: The Bushbaby Ripstop Waterproof’s drawbacks may be outweighed by the price, but I suspect other jackets have more advantages for many junior walkers.
