Berghaus Arkle IA

This waterproof jacket from Berghaus has a long cut, which some will love. There’s plenty of adjustment to fine-tune the fit with Velcro/elastic cuffs and drawcords at the waist and hem. However, it’s let down by the roll away hood, which isn’t deep enough to cover the head properly and so doesn’t offer much protection from driving rain. As a versatile waterproof the Arkle isn’t bad at all and will certainly cross over from the hill to the high street. However, for pure walking it falls down, mainly because of the weak hood. It’s also quite heavy. The pockets are great though, with a huge one on the chest that can take a map. Attention to detail is also good, with well protected zips and a bombproof double storm flap.

Verdict: A sound all-rounder that would score higher marks with a better hood. It’s also quite heavy and bulky to pack. A good buy if versatility is more important to you than real poor weather performance.
