At one end of the fleecy scale there's the cuddly cloud-like top, perfect for the pub and light spring days. At the other end there’s the W.N.W, which takes its cues from soft shell and is a dedicated winter weather warrior. At its core is Gore Windstopper fabric, which vies with Polartec for top honours when it comes to fleece technology. On a cold, windy day in Snowdonia, not only did it protect me against the biting chill, with only a simple base-layer beneath, it also breathed so well that I never felt an urge to take it off. I felt snug and well-armed all the way up and only needed to top it up with a waterproof on a sub-zero summit. The two hand-warmer pockets are somewhat awkward to access beneath a backpack waistband but happily, both will take a full OS map. I missed the chest pocket though, especially on a jacket which is an otherwise brilliant standalone bit of kit.
