The Volt is a joy to wear. It’s called a ‘zoned’ jacket, with the zones being separate panels of material stitched together to make a jacket that moves naturally with you, while keeping the heat where you want it. It uses the warmest version of Polartec, Thermal Pro, which has a honeycomb design that creates air pockets within the jacket to trap warmth while also keeping you ventilated. Note that
the right handwarmer pocket is much larger than the left and has a double zip: this is a nice touch meaning you can access it even with a rucksack harness on (a rarity on waist pockets). The chest pocket easily takes a smartphone, too. The main downside is weight: it’s one of the heaviest fleeces on the market. But that may not matter if you’re wearing it on a biting February day and you’re just glad of the warmth. Other than that, the only quibble is the sleeves, which are overlong and tend to bunch up over the forearm – a bit of a pain when you want to put a hard-shell on over the top.

A toasty mid-layer in winter; a complete outer layer for high country in summer.
