The mid-priced Montane eVent Superfly Trousers strike a fine balance between technicality and simplicity. They may lack features such as belt loops, pockets and a fly zip, but they do have reinforced ankles, backside and knees, a drawstring at the ankle for volume adjustment, and water-resistant zips. They feel like trousers that have had some serious thought over the essential features a hillwalker might need for a functional, durable overtrouser, and have had the rest stripped away to save weight. While pockets would have been nice, the overall result is impressive. The cut is slim, there’s extra articulation at the knees, a ¾ length zip which can be opened from the top for venting, taped seams, a drawstring waist and rubber zip pulls, which are easy to operate using gloves. The fabric is 3-layer eVent, which is a highly breathable waterproof fabric that allows sweat to evaporate directly through a membrane packed with millions of pores. The Montane eVent Superfly Trousers are ideal for 4-season use for most hill-walkers and scramblers at a pleasing, realistic price.
