Montane has a long history of producing function-orientated designs, and the new eVent Evolution/Venture is no exception. It tips the scales at a very reasonable 436g (men’s Evolution size L) and has all the basic features a walker needs. Firstly the material is the well-respected eVent fabric, which offers extremely high levels of performance. The cut allows excellent freedom of movement without the hem or sleeves riding up. There are three large chest pockets, and these can all be easily accessed while wearing a rucksack. The hood is particularly good as it can be worn over a climbing helmet when scrambling, while its fit, movement and wired peak provide superb performance when walking in the hills. Also the hood does not have flappy chinguards that can be so irritating unless battened down. When not needed, the hood can be rolled down and secured at the collar. But the Montane eVent Evolution/Venture does not have the most waterproof of designs as the front zip has no external stormflap (the women’s Venture does) so it is possible for water to get in more easily. The chest pockets are mesh-lined (not on the Venture) so they can allow water in if wet items are stashed in them or they are not closed properly. The body is slightly shorter, so waterproof trousers will be needed more readily.
Fabric waterproofness extremely waterproof
Fabric breathability extremely breathable
Sizes XS-XXL (men’s eVent Evolution); 8-18 (women’s Venture)
Weight 436g (men’s L)
Made in China
Stores in the UK 100
Verdict: The Montane eVent Evolution/Venture very well-specified jacket for general walking, backpacking and scrambling in the hills.
