Montane Terra Stretch 2009

Montane’s Terra Stretch trousers are the stretchiest and lightest of the finalists at a weeny 284g, so they are a great option for travelling fast and light in the spring, summer and early autumn. The great thing about these trousers is their simple and clean cut with only the essential features: two front and one zipped side pocket. The lack of front zipped pockets keeps the weight down and they’re stretchy enough to scramble, climb and even do cartwheels in (should you feel the urge!) with their diamond crotch allowing for great freedom of movement. These trousers are comfy and fit well on sporty-shaped women. The Lycra, Cordura and Tactel fabric that Montane uses is durable, and wind- and water-resistant despite its thin, very lightweight feel. Usefully, you can gather in the ankles with a choice of
two poppers. But they almost look like leggings – which can be slightly unflattering. Lack of zips on the two front pockets makes them less secure, side pocket zipper is too tiny to be used easily with thick gloves. Button flies are not the easiest option to open either. Not suitable for use in winter.

Verdict: Montane Terra Stretch trousers are well-priced, ultralight mild-weather kecks ideal for high-adrenaline fun.
