Keela Scruffer 2011

Keela Scruffer trousers are an amazing price for what you get. The fabric is four-way stretch with good water resistance and a robustness that should allow it to handle scrapes with rocks. There is reinforcement at the ankle cuff, and this area can also be adjusted with Velcro for a closer cinched-in fit if needed. The ankle zip means you can fit these over boots with big high cuffs too. For extra cooling the zipped thigh vents are useful. The two hip pockets are zipped and inside one of them is a second zipped security pocket. There is also a seat pocket. A waistbelt completes the features. All these details at this price is impressive, and together this creates a trouser that is ideal for general mountain and hill use from walking to scrambling and mountaineering. But though the Keela Scruffers have most of the technical features demanded for hill and mountain travel, they lack the finesse provided by higher-priced equivalents. The fabric is not quite as comfy next to the skin either, and the pockets are relatively small.
There is no gusset behind the ankle cuff zip so you need to keep it zipped down to prevent draughts.

The Keela Scruffers are stunning trousers for the price (indeed, they won our ‘Best value’ accolade), and great for mountaineering and hill-walking in all but warm weather; however more money brings more finesse.
