The Haglöfs Rugged Mountain Pant is a well-established workhorse for backpackers and hillwalkers. The fabric is a tough and relatively heavy nylon canvas called Climatic and the seams are mostly triple-stitched, making this trouser ideal for taking a lot of abuse on the hills. There is no stretch in the main fabric, but tough stretch waterproof panels are fitted in the seat and knees. The waist has some elastication and also belt loops and is very comfortable, but there is no diamond crotch panel, so while the fit and freedom of movement were good on me it is perhaps a little closer around the crotch than may be ideal! The ankle cuff has a lace loop as well as webbing adjustment although a zipped gusset panel would make it even better as the lower leg is quite wide. The two zipped pockets on the thigh are large enough for maps while the two zipped vents at the back of the thigh are good for venting during mild conditions, although a mesh gusset in these would be useful to block some of the breeze. More stretch fabric and a narrower ankle may make the Haglöfs Rugged Mountain Pants better for mountaineers and winter use, but for autumn they are a good all-rounder.
Fabric Climate (100% polyamide), Ventex waterproof panel

The Haglöfs Rugged Mountain Pant is a well-proven, popular trouser for hillwalking if you like thigh pockets and are happy with the level of stretch. It won Trail’s ‘Best for Women’ award.
